Name That Nanny

Posted May 15th, 2009 by Wendy

On the weekend the families got together to celebrate Mother’s Day. The question came up- What do you want to be called, Gran, Granny? It was interesting because we are all very polite and nice. No one wanted to offend but the other Mum had been hoping to be Grandma and was worried I’d be upset. She was really keen on Grandma but would have let the children (the new parents) decide if we couldn’t work it out ourselves. Luckily, I have been called Nanna for years by the children, pretending their pets were their children. I’m still happy with Nanna and my counterpart gets to be Grandma.

It is probably a good idea for you to express your wishes regarding the name choice early so you can work it out with the other parents. It could save arguments or hurt feelings. This is supposed to be a happy time for all. No one wants to seem petty or childish but it can mean a lot, especially if there is a family tradition or other strong reason for choosing a particular title.

Some new grandparents feel Granny makes them sound old and are uncomfortable with the idea. Perhaps a new name could be invented, or maybe they just go by their christian name.

All this should be sorted out so no one is uncomfortable or unhappy. Remember, this is a special time foreveryone.

Enjoy!
