Hand Sanitiser Warning

Posted September 9th, 2009 by Wendy

I have just been reading about a case where a young child was taken to hospital. She was semiconscious and unresponsive but they could initially find nothing obvious wrong.
It turned out that her school had recently introduced the no wash hand sanitiser to the classrooms. Children are curious and this little girl had wondered what it would taste like. Luckily she had only licked her hand.
When they worked out what to test for they found her blood alcohol level was 85% — six hours after. There’s no telling what it would have been if they had tested immediately.
When you have young children around you need to be aware they don’t think the same as you. They are inquisitive and their sense of taste is different. It is not just the obvious things like the products in the cleaning cupboard that we need to watch. Something as ordinary as hand sanitiser could be fatal to a small child.
